Job scorecard template
Decide what a role needs before you read the first CV, and hold every candidate to the same list. Free to download and use, with or without any software. From Venora, the makers of Venora Match (Matosinhos, Portugal).
Essential or preferred?
An essential requirement is one you would turn someone down for missing. A preferred requirement is one you would like but could teach or do without. If everything is essential, nothing is, so keep the essential list short.
How to use it
- Write the requirements before you open any applications.
- Mark each one essential or preferred, and note what would count as evidence.
- Agree the list with everyone who will review candidates.
- Score each candidate against each line, using only what is in front of you.
- Check the essential lines first. Use preferred lines to separate those who meet them.
- Keep the completed scorecards with the vacancy, so you can explain each decision later.
The scoring scale
| Score | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | No evidence in the application |
| 1 | Some related evidence, but not the requirement itself |
| 2 | Clear evidence the requirement is met |
| 3 | Clear evidence, beyond what the role needs |
What it looks like filled in
| Type | Requirement | What counts as evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Has handled customer complaints directly | Names a role or situation in which they did this |
| Essential | Can work the published shift pattern | Stated in the application or confirmed at screening |
| Preferred | Has used a ticketing system | Names a system, or describes using one |
An invented customer service role, for illustration only.
Keep it fair
Ask for what the job needs, not a stand-in for it. Years of experience can quietly screen out older or younger candidates, and “native speaker” can screen by nationality, so ask for the skill or the language level instead.
See it on one of your own vacancies
Request early access and we run it with you on a real role and the applications you received for it — you leave with the ranked shortlist and the reasoning behind it, whether or not you take it further. Nothing is charged during early access. Early-access teams then keep the published launch rate for their plan, locked for twelve months, and we tell you before any plan starts billing.
